ABSTRACT
Research synthesis has a long and distinguished history in reading research, although formal methods for conducting such inquiry have been formulated only recently. Perhaps no research paradigm is perceived to be as immediately applicable to policy and practice, nor is as widely misunderstood, as synthesis research. This chapter provides a brief history of synthesis research in reading, and a sketch of some of its basic methodological techniques and interpretive issues.
