ABSTRACT

The act whereby the guilt of the people of Israel was transferred to a goat was a purification ritual that is the antecedent of the modern idea of a scapegoat. The purpose of such cleansing was not to reconcile the community to God and achieve forgiveness of sins, as does an atonement ritual, but rather it was a ritual that purified the congregation because it removed the sin from the camp.
