ABSTRACT

The topics addressed in the chapters by Parshall; Way, Steffen, and Anderson; and Davey and Nering are new to the CBT field. In fact, 26 of the papers in the list of 47 references in the three chapters are unpublished. Newcomers to the field may be surprised, but the fact is the topics were never part of the pioneering conferences on CBT held in the late 1970s by Weiss and the military organizations who were funding CAT research (Weiss, 1983). Even in the most significant book on the topic of CAT published in the last 10 years—the book by Wainer and his colleagues at ETS—less than 10 pages of 300 were devoted to these four topics (Wainer et al., 1990)!
