ABSTRACT
All learning is a quest for greater participation. We each seek to name our world, to influence decisions that shape our lives, to speak with an audible and credible voice. Students, no less than their teachers, seek control over the educational milieu that brings them together. The agendas of students and their teachers are similar in many ways, perhaps in most ways, but there are differences as well, and therein lies the struggle for democracy in the classroom.
