ABSTRACT

Truffaut shares the internal turmoil of a director as he reaches the midpoint of production. “Before filming begins I always hope above all to make a beautiful film. Then as the first difficulties arise I lower my sights and I’m satisfied simply to get the film completed.” The ultimate message of the film, however, is one of great reward. We see that despite all the challenges, everything comes together in the end and the result is magical. Truffaut confides in his lead actor: “There’s more harmony in films than in life. No traffic jams; no dead periods. Films keep going on, you know, like trains in the night. People like you, like me, are only happy in our work, making films” (Truffaut, 1973).
