ABSTRACT

Spain, like many other countries, European and worldwide, is multicultural. However, compulsory schooling in Europe promoted, from its introduction, the development of a single language and of common values and national feeling of identity. The main objective of compulsory schooling in Europe, in order to establish clear distinctions between Spain and other countries, cultures, and languages, has been to homogenize the nations’ children. This generally implied the omission of minorities,1 especially linguistic minorities. National teacher preparation schemes were used to create and establish the basic concepts and values of the nation state.
