ABSTRACT

Both the notion of citizenship and the notion of modern education are related to the basic premises of the Enlightenment. The movement of the Enlightenment suggests that there is a historical and social construction of human identities and therefore the individual socialization in rational principles is considered important. Educational institutions-as key institutions of the Enlighten-ment-have played a pivotal role in the constitution of citizenship in the liberal states in Latin America. It is precisely the liberal definition of citizenship that has profound implications for any discussion of multiculturalism.
