ABSTRACT

In this chapter, our focus is basically on the nature of language planning as an applied sociolinguistic activity. We begin with a broad overview of the nature and purposes of language planning and language policy activities in general, including

examination of the role of ideology in language policy, and then turn to a discussion of the use (and misuse) of language planning and language policy to achieve social, political, and educational ends. Throughout the chapter, examples of language policies and language planning activities are drawn from a number of significant cases of language planning and language policy implementation in different societies and contexts.
