ABSTRACT
A major premise of this book is that relationships are the mental creations of individuals, as Duck (1990) argued. They exist in the minds of individuals to the extent that thought is concentrated on someone else. There are American cultural maxims reflecting relationships as mental creations, such as “Absence makes the heart grow fonder,” as well as the inverse, “Out of sight, out of mind.”
