ABSTRACT

The commonsense approach to curriculum improvement is to get the interested parties to agree on what needs to be done and just do it. Find out what teachers, school leaders, parents, and other interested parties dislike about the present curriculum and what new possibilities excite them. Pick a curriculum improvement focus that has broad support and little opposition. Appoint a committee of able teachers and charge them to develop curriculum plans and materials to bring about the targeted improvements. Have the committee’s work reviewed widely by all interested parties, revised if necessary, and submit it for approval by the proper authorities. Finally, enlist the cooperation of teachers and school leaders to implement the newly adopted curriculum in schools and classrooms. This common sense approach is not necessarily easy to carry out, but it is direct, straightforward and not at all mysterious. It is doubtlessly the most commonly used approach to improving the curriculum of schools and classrooms.
