ABSTRACT

In today’s information age, teenagers are bombarded with information from a number of media sources. Many times they are actively looking for this information, particularly in cases involving health-related problems. Therefore, one of the more important functions of the media is to provide health information to those seeking it. The mass media can be tools for the promotion of healthy behaviors (Flora, Maibach, & Maccoby, 1989; Wallack, 1990). New media, such as the Internet, and cable television channels, such as MTV, have become popular sources of health information for teenagers (Mink, 1997). In addition, traditional media, such as entertainment television and newspapers, often cover health issues that may influence health-related knowledge and lead to healthier lifestyles (Montgomery, 1990; Signorelli, 1990).
