ABSTRACT

It is just before 2:00 p.m. as Deonicia quietly makes her way down the path, clutching a plastic bag filled with her literacy notebook, math book, and loose papers, ready to sit under the branches of the pepeto tree and wait for the other students to arrive. Despite her age and frailty, she offers to help Robin and Sylvia carry the blackboard out from the school building. They carefully place it against the largest tree, talking over the day’s events as they wait for the rest of the students to arrive. Deonicia soon begins work on some simple math problems Robin assigns her,

knowing that they will need to wait at least 15 minutes for the others to arrive in order to begin class. Sylvia takes this opportunity to explain to Robin what they had done in class the day before while Robin had been away, observing a literacy class in a different community.
