ABSTRACT

In the fi ve models that follow, we share a variety of ways that a community can rally their forces to make a difference and engage in social change. What we can learn from the models is that there must be a common purpose, and continued dialogue, to critically (and helpfully) frame these new learning initiatives. In addition, a respect for individual values and experiences is necessary to create innovative programs. Indeed, what we’ve learned from each model presented in this book, especially Miranda Wright’s, is the necessity to facilitate and honor every individual-from the elder to the child-in our efforts. Finally, we believe that all educational programs must be grounded in Native values. Educational leaders

must ground their community work on common purpose, critical dialogue, respect for individual knowledge and experience, and Native values (those particular to their group).
