The purpose of assessment is to give children a positive sense of their progress toward literacy. Assessment portfolios are child-centered management techniques for evaluating oral language, listening, reading, and writing progress over time. Both process and product are important in assessing the language arts. Effective assessment systems involve children, peers, teachers, and parents throughout the process of observing, responding, analyzing, and grading. Reader response to literature is an important vehicle for assessing comprehension and composition.
