ABSTRACT

We have different ways of behaving ourselves which we employ as custom requires on different occllsions, - at a church-service, at a funeral, at social gatherings, when we have to propose a toast, when we meet our superior in the street, etc. All this is demanded by ceremony, and we must behave accordingly if we would be correct. It is just the same with language, except that here the demands made upon us are still more complicated, and in part, at any rate, require to be still more strictly complied with, than the other customs just alluded to.
