ABSTRACT

We begin this chapter by reviewing the impact of maternal and paternal depression on child outcome. Although parental depression is a major risk factor for child outcome, it is also clear that offspring of both depressed fathers and depressed mothers are highly varied in outcome and that many children demonstrate no social or behavioral difficulties at all. One of the issues highlighted by our review is that despite this heterogeneity of offspring adjustment, little is known about which of these children will display difficulties.
