ABSTRACT

In this chapter we apply the dual coding approach to written composition. Our aim is to show that the theory provides an effective, parsimonious, and far-reaching explanation of the process of composing. Specifically, we (a) briefly review DCT with an emphasis on aspects that are unique to writing, (b) give an example of the act of composing viewed from the perspective of the theory, (c) interpret another influential cognitive theory of composing in DCT terms, (d) review anecdotal evidence of dual coding processes in composing, and, (e) attempt an explanation of the key rhetorical concept of persona.
