ABSTRACT

Technology is the tool with which we manipulate our environment in our perpetual quest to gain greater control over life. Communication is essential for the process of control. Manufacturing technologies and consumer technologies have received much attention in the literature on technology diffusion. It was precisely because there was little diffusion research done on communication technology that I chose it as the subject of this work. In so doing, it seemed only appropriate to begin by examining the first modem communication technology which seriously altered the ability to control and mediate experiences with other social institutions.
