ABSTRACT

“I am a middle class white American, pretty average. However, I grew up in a house with no central heat, no neighbors within 1/4 to 1/2 of a mile, no town within 7 miles, no rock music, and extremely limited TV (weird, huh? And you wonder why I turned out like I did?) The suburban American experience was pretty alien to me throughout my childhood. I could fillet a fish without a single bone, start a woodstove by myself by age 10, and sleep with an old-fashioned soapstone wrapped in towels at the foot of my bed, but I do pretty poorly at Trivial Pursuit. Am I a minority? Point is, there are as many differences between individuals within a labeled culture as there are similarities, and I think we need to keep our eyes on that.”
