ABSTRACT

LindaDarling-Hammond (1997) articulated it clearly: "To this day, most schools in the United States do an extraordinarily poor job of educating students of color" (p. 1). Significant in this quote is the phrase, "To this day ...", for it alludes to the history of inequitable education for minority students in the United States. While facilities and finances playa role in the equitable delivery ofeducation, the role of the teacher is paramount (Darling-Hammond, 1997; Joyce & Showers, 1988;KOZD~ 1991). All things being equal, individual teachers make a significant difference in the learning processes of all students. Therefore, creating equitable education for students of color must begin with individual teachers.
