ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we turn our attention to the process of implementing the tailored health

communication program we have developed. Many of the steps in implementing a

tailored health communication program are similar to those involved in any other type of

educational or communicationbased health intervention. However, the data-driven nature

of tailored communication presents some unique issues. This chapter provides an outline

of the overall intervention process, with particular attention paid to those aspects that are

unique or especially important to tailoring. Five major components are discussed:

1. Developing an implementation plan

2. Preparing for implementation to begin

3. Collecting and managing data

4. Producing feedback

5. Delivering feedback

For each of the five components, this chapter discusses specific tasks involved. The

chapter also provides recommendations for dealing with quality control issues. Quality

control is a key concern during all implementation steps due to the fact that each tailored

document is different from all others previously produced.
