ABSTRACT

Synopsis This chapter provides a basic understanding of how an individual’s personal style is connected to leadership effectiveness. We first define effective leadership as making sense of situations and motivating teams to successful performance. The fact that so many fail at these endeavors underlies our main premise that personalities that don’t usefully correlate with the demands of the job sink more leaders than lack of technical skills. With the introduction of the Big 5 theory of personality, a “match-up” is made between the responsibilities of leadership and the role of personality.
