ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the state of empirical knowledge of contemporary popular music. We begin with a discussion of the factors contributing to the appreciation of popular music and proceed to an exploration of music videos. From here, we progress to differences among currently popular music genres and their devotees, tracing social and personality correlates. Finally, we highlight the increasing body ofresearch designed to demonstrate the effects ofpopular music on young people.
