ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 presented the argument that the basal ganglia have an important influence on the intensity of motor output. The basal ganglia, in conjunction with the thalamus and cortex, also play an important role in the elaboration and selection of responses a role corresponding roughly to the motivation and response generator complex of Fig. 2.2. The possible contributions of the basal ganglia to a variety of learning situations are outlined in this chapter.
