ABSTRACT

I remember when I first began stringing (working part-time or on occa sional assignments) for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. It was 1983 and I was teaching at the time in the school of journalism at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, which is about two hours east and south of St. Louis. The Globe-Democrat had just closed its Southern Illinois bureau, which had been based in Carbondale, and the newspaper sent out flyers encouraging student journalists to cover stories for it. I announced this opportunity to students in several of my classes, but couldn't interest anyone.
