Trend pieces are among the most popular stories you'll see in the pa pers, though. By definition, a trend is something that's new, and what's new is news. Plus, the mere fact that certain things-sport utility vehicles, for example, or smoking by young people-are growing in popularity is proof enough that other people will read about these things.
