ABSTRACT
One of the strongest imperatives of our [American] culture is that we must leave home. Unlike many peasant societies where it is common to live with parents until their death and where one worships parents and ancestors all one’s life, for us leaving home is the normal expectation and childhood is in many ways a preparation for it.
