ABSTRACT
Up to now this description and analysis of European urban growth has taken the city as its basic unit of observation. We have enquired into the characteristics of cities - their size, setting and principal functions among others - in order to understand better the patterns of urbanization. This chapter enquires into the sources of urban population change, a subject that requires us to shift our attention from the city to the individual and the family.
