The Transition from Arithmetic to Algebra: Prealgebra and Functions

Prealgebra can provide a bridge between arithmetic and algebra. It can give students the opportunity to informally construct an understanding of algebraic concepts and procedures by building on their existing knowledge of arithmetic and geometry (Kieran & Chalouh, 1993). In Unit 16 ·1, we focus on prealgebra and initial algebra instruction.
