ABSTRACT
To foster interest in mathematics, dedicate part of your bulletin board space to a Math Corner. Part of this display can be a Daily (or Weekly) Challenge, which can consist of a problem, puzzle, or riddle. The fraction problem shown in the Daily Challenge above (from Behr, Wachsmuth, & Post, 1985) requires considerable thought and could serve as the basis for a discussion on fraction addition. Such a problem is ideal for fostering a fraction operation sense. (To make the problem illustrated above easier for third and fourth graders, eliminate the constraint that the sum of the fractions has to be less than 1.)
