ABSTRACT

Constructing a bar graph to report school, grade-level, or classroom information can be an effective way of connecting decimal concepts to a concrete display and to children’s lives. The bulletin board above stemmed from an extended unit on environmental sciences and was updated weekly. Note that the display also connects decimals to the relatively familiar and important everyday domain of money. Each subdivision of a bar represents an increment of 10¢, and 10 subdivisions, an increment of $1. A more elaborate graph could involve adding even smaller subdivisions to represent increments of 1¢.
