ABSTRACT

Botched Travel Arrangements (♦ 7-8+). You are going on a ship cruise. Unfortunately, your plane was delayed and, by the time you arrived dockside, the ship had left. You charter a helicopter to catch up with your ship. If the ship left five hours ago and sailed at a speed of 22 mph and your helicopter can fly at 90 mph, how many hours will it take you to catch up with the ship? Illustrate how the problem can be solved using (a) arithmetic, (b) a graph, and (c) algebra. (Source: Chiu, 1996.)
