ABSTRACT
Chapter 4 gives a brief sketch of notions about measurement, deliberately designed to allow the main developments of theory to go through, without too much conceptual trouble due to lack of foundations. The main points of that chapter are that (a) measurement is the assignment of numbers to quantifiable attributes according to a rule, (b) the rule can be arbitrary, allowing more than one assignment, and (c) distinct assignments can be nonlinearly related.
