ABSTRACT
The Internet was created by the U.S. Department of Defense during the 1960s to provide a communication medium for scientists working on defense projects. Gradually it expanded to 50 sites, many on university campuses. In the early 1980s the network (called ARPANET) was opened to users who did not have security clearances and its name was changed to the Internet.
