ABSTRACT

Readers have always used technology to improve their learning, whether it be clay tablets

5,000 years ago, books 500 years ago, or computers beginning 50 years ago. Today,

computer technology is integrated into almost every aspect of learning in higher

education: textbooks arrive with CD-ROMs; homework is delivered and graded on the

World Wide Web (WWW); and assignments are designed to be completed collaboratively

through electronic mail (e-mail). Facility with computer technology is essential for

college (Lemke, 1993) as well as career success (Groff, 1996; Oblinger & Rush, 1997).
