ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss two important concepts for performing applied research. These concepts, measurement reliability and measurement validity, are part of overall research validity, or the quality of the whole study. In chapters 6 and 10, we gave a brief overview of the four components of research validity. Those four components were internal validity, measurement reliability and statistics, measurement validity and the generalizability of the constructs, and external validity. Measurement reliability is a component of measurement reliability and statistics. Measurement validity is a component of measurement validity and the generalizability of the constructs. We discuss measurement reliability and validity in depth in this chapter. Then, in chapter 23, we discuss how both are part of research validity.
