ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the major themes of this book in an effort to describe and explain juvenile delinquency, substance use, sexual intercourse, and mental health problems (covert behavior, physical aggression, conduct problems, attention deficit/hyperactivity, shy/withdrawn behavior, and depressed mood). The main aims of this volume were to address the following questions:

1. What is the prevalence and age of onset of delinquency, substance use, and early sexual behavior for three samples of boys at ages 7, 11, and 14? What is the prevalence of mental health problems for these ages? How strong are the relationships among these problem behaviors in each of the samples?
