ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide a response to the case studies presented in Constructions of Literacy: Studies of Teaching and Learning in and Out of Secondary Schools. In responding to the cases, I have chosen a feminist poststructuralist perspective in which to frame my commentary. This perspective, which I describe in the first section of the chapter, differs in its assumptions from the perspectives that the case authors drew on in framing their own work. But it is precisely this difference that opens up interesting possibilities for analyzing the findings that the authors have presented herean analysis that I devote considerable time and space to in the second section of the chapter. Finally, in the last section of the chapter, I offer a critique and some suggestions for future research stemming from what I see as aspects of secondary literacy that need further addressing.
