ABSTRACT
The transformation of the United States from an agricultural to a predominantly industrial nation within a half-century and the accompanying rise to a position of world power was directly associated with accelerating urbanisation. Which came first, the hen of mounting industrial strength or the egg of increasing urban influence, may be arguable, but the fact of profound change remains. It proceeded by fits and starts.
