ABSTRACT
A glance around any selection of schools and centers for young children should inform the viewer that every site is not equal or the same. Without some explanation, however, it may be difficult to put one’s finger on just what the differences are. There are schools that are directly influenced by theories or philosophies past or present, and the titles and mission statements of these schools make their identification obvious. As well, it is possible to visit schools and centers in which teachers are permitted to base educational practices on their personal philosophies, and parents can choose among them. Then, there are numerous child-care centers with no other guiding educational philosophy than the locally mandated standards for safety.
