ABSTRACT
Written more than a century ago, this description captures the doubt and obsessional preoccupation, as well as the suffering, that characterize body dysmorphic disorder (BDD; Fava, 1992; Morselli, 1891). Morselli was one of several early psychopathologists who considered BDD to be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Another was Janet (1903), who referred to BDD as obsession de la honte du corps, or obsession with shame of the body, and classified it within a group of syndromes related to OCD.
