ThenewpossibilitiesMarch'sideaswouldseemtoofferstemfrom differentgeometricallayoutstotheonescurrentlyemployed.Itisfrom exactlythesamebasisthatSirLeslieMartin'sinnovatoryideasexpressed inthe'Gridasgenerator'arederived.Theydifferonlyastheyarerelated morespecificallytotheinternallayoutofthecity,andastheyarebased oncourtformdevelopments,ratherthanlinearones.AsMarchand Martinhaveshownelsewhere,however,boththelinearandthecourtformsofdevelopmentareinherentlymoreefficienttypesoflayoutthan the'pavilion'ortowerwhichisextremelywastefulofspace!"Martin demonstratesthatthegridofstreetsdefinesthegeneralplotpattern, andthatforanygridthereexistsanoptimumbalancebetweenit,the plotpatternandamountofbuildingthatcanreasonablybesupported. Hefurthershowsthatwhilstthepressureforfloorspacehasgenerally increasedincities,theforcesofinertiahavemilitatedagainstthelogical solution-anincreaseinthescaleofthegrid,thebalancebetweenthe variouselementsdisappearingintheprocess.
