ABSTRACT

In 1994, in his role as a discussant for the career theory and convergence project, Osipow noted the need in vocational psychology for a theory (or multiple theories) of career counseling. He stated that the practice of career counseling would be advanced with the creation of such theory. In 1996, in a similar commentary on the convergence of career theory and practice, Osipow suggested that some progress had been made in this endeavor, but that the difficulty inherent in trying to define and research career counseling may stand in the way of real progress for some time to come. In these two commentaries, Osipow highlighted the essential dilemma that confronts the practitioner of career counseling-what is to guide one’s practice?
