ABSTRACT

Chapters in this section explore how new technologies are transforming instruction in

classrooms and other learning environments. Clearly this is taking place as preservice

teacher education (Kinzer & Risko, chap. 11, this volume) and adult literacy programs

(Askov & Bixler, chap. 10, this volume) are being altered by new instructional tools. In

addition, one can see this happening as students in distant classrooms communicate with

one another over the Internet (Garner & Gillingham, chap. 13, this volume), constructing

new meanings for themselves and for others in the world around them.
