ABSTRACT

Physical activity and exercise are quite possibly the single most beneficial behaviors for one's health. Although high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and cigarette smoking are the most commonly known risk factors, physical inactivity and lack of exercise are other modifiable risk factors now receiving prominent national attention (Blair et al., 1989; McGinnis & Foege, 1993; Paffenbarger, Hyde, et al., 1994; Paffenbarger & Lee, 1996; Pate et al., 1995; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS], 1990, 1996). Surprisingly engaging in activity and exercising may be even more beneficial than quitting smoking or controlling your blood pressure (Blair et al., 1996).
