ABSTRACT

Substance abuse seriously affects U.S. women and men of all ethnic backgrounds. Physiological, psychological, and social consequences extend beyond the individual and have effects on families and communities. This chapter provides an overview of the epidemiology of use and abuse of alcohol and the most frequently used illicit drugs as well as reviews of physiological and behavioral effects and social consequences of substance abuse. It also addresses treatment and prevention, and possible future directions for research and praxis.
