ABSTRACT

While many of the issues raised by the authors of the preceding essays were either strongly supported or rejected by the metropolitan area study groups and seminar participants, there were others on which opinion was divided. This chapter draws upon these reactions. The nature of these reactions, of itself, provides an interesting comment on the degree to which it is possible or acceptable to develop both universal for the provision of any one service, and a more comprehensive approach to the servicing of the metropolis. In most instances, some comment was made on the degree to which situations in different metropolitan areas around the world are comparable, and this is noted where relevant. The purpose of the comments that follow is, however, to add to and qualify what has been said in the preceding essays, with a view to identifying the different ways in which we can improve life in the contemporary metropolis. From this, and from the similar comments appearing in Chapter 14, we shall be able to advance to the establishment of an integrated approach to the comprehensive planning and administrative process for the metropolitan area.
