ABSTRACT

Spanish coexists with other languages in prominent situations of bilingualism throughout the world. Silva-Corvalan (1995) reported that, as a majority language, Spanish is found in several Latin American countries along with indigenous languages (e.g., Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia), with Portuguese (e.g., Uruguay), and with English (e.g., Puerto Rico). As a minority language, it coexists with English in the United States, with Basque in the Basque Country in Europe; with Arabic, French, and indigenous languages in Africa; and with indigenous languages in the Philippines.
