ABSTRACT

Although all sciences have progressed over the past few decades, the most striking advances have arguably occurred in genetics. Among the changes that took place during his 7-year tenure as editor of American Journal of Human Genetics, Charles Epstein (1996) highlighted:

• Continuing success of the Human Genome Project; • Discovery of triplet repeat diseases; • First uses of gene therapy; • Discovery of microdeletion syndromes; • Mouse models for many genetic disorders; and • New methods for prenatal screening and diagnosis.
