ABSTRACT
Before embarking upon a more detailed analysis of contemporary problems, it seems appropriate to devote a chapter to setting the scene. Inevitably the examples are selective, but nevertheless represent things happening in all towns and cities. A very brief examination of three aspects of urbanism may be sufficient to indicate the scale of the problem. They are, the centre, the square, and the street.
